Amy Cesal is a data visualization designer, instructor, and consultant with extensive experience in creating accessible, engaging, and impactful visual representations of complex data. She is the co-founder of the Data Visualization Society and currently serves on its advisory council, where she has played a pivotal role in shaping the field of data visualization. Amy’s groundbreaking work has earned her three prestigious Information is Beautiful Awards, and she is widely recognized for her innovative and unconventional approach to data storytelling.
With a Master's Degree in Information Visualization from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Amy brings both technical expertise and creative insight to her work. She is an adjunct professor in MICA’s Data Analytics and Visualization master's program and also teaches Data and Text Visualization in the Information Design & Strategy program at Northwestern University. Beyond her academic roles, Amy has pioneered the use of data visualization style guidelines, establishing best practices that enhance clarity and accessibility. She frequently writes and speaks on the intersection of design, data, and storytelling.
Amy's professional experience spans leadership and creative roles at prominent organizations. As Senior Design Director of Data Visualization at Morning Consult, she built and led a team of designers, established a center of excellence, and developed custom visualizations and style guidelines. At the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, she created data visualization standards that extended the organization's brand while meeting accessibility requirements. Her portfolio also includes designing COVID-19 dashboards, auto loan comparison tools, and credit score explainers that have made data more understandable and actionable for diverse audiences.
Currently a Product Evangelist at everviz, Amy specializes in collaborative problem-solving and visual storytelling that bridges technical precision with creativity. Her ability to translate data into compelling visuals has made her a sought-after expert in both industry and academia.
When not immersed in design, Amy enjoys experimenting with creative, unusual visualizations and sharing her knowledge through writing, speaking, and teaching. She is driven by a passion for data-driven storytelling and the belief that every chart, graph, or infographic has the potential to inform, inspire, and delight.
