Jeff McMillan is a veteran editor and writer with over 25 years of experience in journalism. His career began as a Dow Jones News Fund intern at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, paving the way for roles at Newsday on Long Island and, since 2005, at The Associated Press (AP). A respected voice in the industry, Jeff has been a member of the AP Stylebook team since 2017, where he has spearheaded the development and refinement of sections addressing complex topics such as gender, sex and sexual orientation; drugs and addiction; and homelessness. His meticulous editing and thoughtful approach to language have made him a key contributor to one of journalism's most authoritative resources.
Jeff's byline has appeared in publications around the globe, including The New York Times, and his insights into style and reporting have been featured in interviews with media outlets such as The Boston Globe, CBS News, and Slate. A passionate advocate for inclusive journalism, Jeff is a longtime member and current board director of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists, where he supports diversity and equity in the industry.
Originally from Midland, Michigan, Jeff is a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He now resides in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with his husband, Bill Nelson, and their beloved 14-year-old pit bull mix, Miller. With a career dedicated to precision and inclusivity in journalism, Jeff continues to set a standard for excellence in the craft.
